Objective assignment will meet:
Building a resource for research and general interest. Student will add to and create outside research links pages to the wiki.
Description of previous assignment:
I did not have a previous assignment that met the particular goal I am working toward with this. In the past, I have invited students to share their resources on the Educator DB, with little response. These posts would also then become buried in the sea of posts, and lost once the course was over.
Rationale for assignment revision:
The wiki environment is much more user friendly than the exact same information I have in Educator that students are not accessing/did not know was there. When I put it on the wiki, suddenly they are accessing it and commenting on it in class (on the Educator DB). They are not to the point where they are participating in the wiki themselves, but I have not required this. The next transition for me will be to work that into the class requirements. I can already see that this will be no problem for students to complete or to want to complete. They are already sharing links on the Educator DB, so why not have them share them on the wiki? The wiki can then continue to be built upon in future classes and show the progression of active learning and participation.
Technology to be used:
Wikispaces wiki, unless I find a better site to use. I have checked out several other wiki sources, practicing by setting up an account for myself, and have found Wikispaces to be the most user-friendly.
Instructions for students to complete assignment:
Step-by-step instructions are already available on the wiki site. Students will be required to post at least two outside resources to the existing resource pages, not more than one source per page (this will require them to broaden their own research scope). I will give them instructions on how to evaluate an outside source and a checklist of criteria the source must meet to qualify for posting on the wiki. I will also have final say as to whether or not the outside source is a viable resource for the class. New pages not already included on the wiki can be added with instructor approval. Comments regarding the use of the site can be added by other students to enhance user experience and searchable keywords for research.
Grading criteria, rubric, and assessment:
Grading based on completion of required elements, as well as basic English skills.
